If you watch Oprah (and who doesn’t), then I know you’re familiar with Dr. Mehmet Oz and his famous “green drink”. Dr. Oz says he drinks it just about every morning and if you look at Oprahs weekly meal plan, you’ll see that she too is drinking it every morning. Me too — Me too!! Yummo!
Dr. Mehmet Oz’s Green Drink Recipe – SERVES 3 to 4
- 2 apples (cored, but leave the skin on them)
- 2 BIG handfuls of spinach
- 1 medium cucumber
- 3 ribs/sticks of chopped celery (if you’re using Vita-mix, you only need to cut the celery rubs into thirds)
- 1/2 inch or teaspoon ginger root, peeled
- 1 bunch parsley
- Juice of 1 lime
- Juice of 1/2 lemon
After everything is combined in a blender (I highly recommend Vita-mix), this recipe makes 28 to 30 ounces — about three to four servings. After Oprah tried this on the show, she was pleasantly surprised and exclaimed “It’s a glass of fresh!”
If you’re not used to green drinks, you may find them a bit “earthy” in the beginning. An easy solution is to increase the fruit content until you get used to the earthy taste. I betcha one day you’ll be craving green drinks just like Dr. Oz’s recipe (I do). But in the beginning (and for as long as you want), feel free to increase the apple, or add a banana, or add in my favorite … fresh mango or cooked sweet potato!
This isn’t a race, it’s a lifestyle.
Here’s why I recommend Vita-Mix …
Vita-Mix & Phytonutrients
If you know me at all, you know there is one kitchen appliance I am passionate about — my Vita-mix blender! Yes, it’s at the top of my “Couldn’t Live Without” list — and yes, you’re going to see a plug for it on every smoothie recipe I write because using a Vita-mix blender gives your smoothies much more nutritional value than any ordinary blender possibly can! And because I care about YOUR health!
Here’s the “skinny” — Vita-Mix processing breaks open the cell walls to release maximum nutrition from whole foods, more than you can get any other way.
Vita-mix gives you everything you’d want from a blender and more! No question about it — the Vita-Mix blender is superior to anything else on the market and well worth the investment!

I watched Oprah today and you had a recipe for a smoothie..with blueberries, banana’s. and another kind of berry..it was a blender berry drink..could you please send me the recipt…
Hey fair Information. It is much useful Later you Think about it. Increasingly valuable. Aloha.
The green drink recipe contains high oxalate veggies( spinach, celery, etc. more than 10 mg.) that started causing problems in my diet. Is there any low oxalate veggies I can substitute. Thanks
I am a diabetic, with kidney failure and have to watch my phofates and sodium. I have a real problem in having high numbers and tend to gain 10 pounts in between my one day on and one day off dialysis. Can you halp me in some recipies? Also I wonder if you juice one meal or two meal with one regular meal?? How does that work?
Hi Cindy, I’m so sorry to hear about the health challenges you’re having. Holy-tamolie, it sounds tough and admire you tremendously for trying to live a healthier lifestyle. In terms of your specific question, I’m not familiar enough with the specifics of a diabetic diet and I truly know nothing of what someone with kidney failure needs to be doing so I would hesitate to offer anything specific. Do you focus on whole grains and fiber rich vegetables?
So far as my juicing/smoothie regiment — I generally have one green drink a day and sometimes I’ll add a fruit smoothie when I’m in the mood for something sweet and satisfying. I can do either as a meal replacement, but I don’t generally. I try to eat a protein first thing in the morning (good for weight loss), and then a green smoothie as a mid morning snack. Then a high fiber lunch, followed by either a high fiber snack or another smoothie (I’ve got several smoothie recipes on this site), then dinner is my smallest meal of the day and it varies considerably.
If I want a sweet after dinner, I’ll have a VitaMix “ice cream”, which is nothing more than a bit of frozen fruit (about 1 cup total) blended with a small amount of liquid. Depending on my mood, the liquid might be lite coconut milk, fat free organic milk, or fruit juice. I make sure I don’t eat ANYTHING after 8 pm.
I hope that helps. Best of success to you and congrats on trying to get your health issues under control.
HELP I am in the process of making Dr Oz”s green drink smoothie and I can’t seem to puree the ingredients. I have half a blender full w/all the juices (lemon and lime) and it only purees the very bottom of it. I’m going to try to process smaller amounts at a time, but I don’t think there is enough liquid to process all the ingredients into 3-4 smoothies. Please e-mail me asap. I don’t want to waste all the ingredients I just got for this drink. Thank you in advance for your quick response.
Well I’ve been working on and off w/this and I’m not even half way yet!!!! I’ve cut the amount in the blender and have even added a little water. But the chunks keep flying off to the edeges during chop and puree. I have a Hamilton Beach blender w/about 10+ settings and I have to keep taking a break cuz I’m afraid to over heat it. But it crushes and blends frozen drinks w/o any problem. HELP I really want to try this receipe due to my type 2 diabetes (on the insulin pump) and my fatty sirr. of the liver (NASH) due to my diabetes. And I would love to lose about 40 lbs.
Here I am again, and I finally got it all pureed, but it didn’t take only 30 secs. to puree. I poured in the the cup I had pureed and just kept adding a handful at a time of the chopped ingreds. till it finally all pureed, but still very thick. It taste good enuf to drink but it is in the freezer to get cold since it took me so long to process. I should 2-3 more cups from the blender which is in the fridge.
NOW my question is how many carbs do I count for each glass (about 10+ ozs.)?????
Hi Anne Marie, I’m sorry I didn’t see all your posts until today. I’m glad you got it worked out. If you’re going to be making green smoothies (or any kind of smoothies with whole fruits and veggies), I really recommend the VitaMix blender. I know it can be expensive, but it’s oh so worth it. Seriously, when I downsized my home and moved into a motorhome to become a fulltime RVer, I had to get rid of most all of my appliances, and being a girl who cooks and cares about health, I was rather attached to my appliances. My VitaMix blender was the one item I wouldn’t even consider getting rid of! I use it all the time — in fact last night I made a quick 30 second strawberry/banana/coconut “ice cream”, with no added sugars. I simply put about 1 cup of frozen strawberries, 1/2 frozen banana, 1/3 cup lite coconut milk in the blender (in the opposite order), and blended it for about 30 seconds. It made a wonderful, fresh, healthy, creamy frozen dessert. Yumm!
OK, back to your question about the carbs. I hate to say this, but when I first started this blog, I used to try to calculate all the nutrition data for each recipe (and you’ll still find it on some of my recipes) and I found it to be way too time consuming for me. Blogging isn’t a full-time gig for me. I do what I do just to be of service to others who are looking for healthier options in their life. What I can share with you is a website called http://nutritiondata.com. They have a calculator on there that will calculate the nutrition content of just about anything you’re interested in. Simply input the recipe, and ta-da, they’ll tell you everything you could possibly want to know about the nutrition of it — and more!
By the way, if you’re interested in purchasing a new VitaMix blender, you can use the link on this website to get FREE shipping. You can also look on eBay, Craigslist, garage sales, etc., for a used blender.
Best of luck to you!
I HAVE MADE THE GREEN DRINK AND I NEED TO KNOWN HOW MUCH DO I DRINK AT A TIME? I CAN’T DRINK THE WHOLE THING AT ONE SETTING. I WANT TO USE IT FOR COLON CLEANSING AND WEIGHT LOSS. DO I DRINK 8 0Z PER DAY? HOW LONG DO I DRINK IT. DO I EAT NORMAL MEALS? I MADE IT WITHOUT LIME BECAUSE THE RECEIPT I USED DID NOT CALL FOR IT. SHOULD I ADD IT NEXT TIME? THANK YOU JOLENE
Hi Jolene, You’ll want to drink about 8 ounces at a time. The recipe makes 3 to 4 servings. Yes, I eat normal meals and consider the green drink a between meal refresher.
I’d add the lime next time. Limes rescued British sailors from scurvy and they can rescue you from any vitamin C deficiency as well as acidosis (too much acid in the body). Limes are wonderful alkaline-forming fruits in the body because of their near zilch sugar content and ultra high mineral content, making them the ideal companion for a health-minded soul.
hi, If i wasn’t able to finish it that day, can i save it for the next day?
Hi Ian, you would be better off to reduce the amount of veggies you’re juicing to make just one serving because each hour that you save your juice, it loses some of it’s nutrients. Having said that, I know we all live busy lives and if time is the issue, you’re better off to make the full batch of juice and save some for the next day. It won’t have as many of the original nutrients (just like the juices you buy in the store don’t have all their original nutrients), but it’s still a healthier alternative than skipping the juice entirely. Ideally, prepare a fresh juice every day. Realistically, do what works best for you.
I used a juicer to make Dr. Oz’s Green Drink. I halved the recipe, with the exception of the lime, and lemon. It is tart, which I like (drinking it now for the first time). I find it quite palatable and refreshing. I’d definitely give this juice an A+.
I’ll bet it would make a tasty juice. Thanks for sharing
Great information. Thank you so much for your service.
Carol
Interested in the recipe for the smoothie, Blueberry Breakfast smoothie that they showed on the Oprah show today August 30th, sure it was a repeat. It’s Dr. Oz recipe for children. thank you
Hi Beverly, I believe this is the recipe you’re searching for … Blueberry Avocado Smoothie
Can I make the drink in bulk? How long does it stay fresh?
Hi Kristin, you can make it in bulk, but I wouldn’t make more than you can drink in a day. The longer it sits, the more vitamins and nutrients it loses.
I am not a twin. I am the mom of three year old twins who have yet to show any type of tteepalhy. However I had a very inconclusive sonogram at only five weeks that was only showing that I had conceived twins. From that point on I strongly sensed that baby A was a boy. I felt it again a few weeks later watching a mother/son dance at a wedding. When I heard at 16 weeks that Baby A “had the potential of being a boy” and at 20 weeks that he was a boy it felt like they were telling me something I already knew. I contrast this with my sense about his twin sister. In that case I knew I was only mildly hoping she was a girl.
What is the name of the machine that Dr. Oz used to turn frozen berries and a banana into ice cream? Where can I purchase one?
I believe Dr Oz is using a Vitamix. It’s the best blender I’ve found to do exactly what you’re asking about and so much more. If you’re interested, you can find more about it here and you can also get a discount code for free shipping.
I was looking for the Eye Protecting Mango Dream Smoothie, but the page cannot be found. How can I get this recipe? I need help with my eyes. Also, how can I order the Vitamix? Hope to hear from some one.
With Kind Regards,
Mary Ann Hauser
Hi MaryAnn, Here’s the link to the Eye Protecting Mango Smoothie. I sincerely hope that helps you! If you use this Vitamix Discount Code, you’ll receive FREE SHIPPING on your VitaMix order. Best of success to you, Mary Ann, as you heal your body the natural way.
