Dr. Ozs Green Drink

Oprah and Dr. Oz with Green Drink Recipe

If you watch Oprah (and who doesnt), then I know youre familiar with Dr. Mehmet Oz and his famous green drink. Dr. Oz says he drinks it just about every morning and if you look at Oprahs weekly meal plan, youll see that she too is drinking it every morning.

Me too Me too!!  Yummo!

Dr. Mehmet Ozs Green Drink Recipe SERVES 3 to 4

  • 2 apples (cored, but leave the skin on them)
  • 2 BIG handfuls of spinach
  • 1 medium cucumber
  • 3 ribs/sticks of chopped celery (if youre using Vita-mix, you only need to cut the celery rubs into thirds)
  • 1/2 inch or teaspoon ginger root, peeled
  • 1 bunch parsley
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon

After everything is combined in a blender (I highly recommend Vita-mix), this recipe makes 28 to 30 ounces — about three to four servings. After Oprah tried this on the show, she was pleasantly surprised and exclaimed Its a glass of fresh!

If youre not used to green drinks, you may find them a bit earthy in the beginning.  An easy solution is to increase the fruit content until you get used to the earthy taste.  I betcha one day youll be craving green drinks just like Dr. Ozs recipe (I do).  But in the beginning (and for as long as you want), feel free to increase the apple, or add a banana, or add in my favorite fresh mango or cooked sweet potato!

This isnt a race, its a lifestyle.

Heres why I recommend Vita-Mix

Vita-Mix & Phytonutrients

How about you just eat the apples, celery, ginger, and spinach?

Some people have issues with textures. I cant eat most whole fruits and vegetables because their textures make me gag.

ThusI turn to smoothies.

Some people dont have a lot of time in the morning to munch away at all of that and there is the issue of getting full before you can eat everything that you need to eat to get the proper amount of nutrients.

Im just saying, that unless you have that time and dont have sensory issues (like me), eating the whole fruits and veggies isnot worth it.

Hi Des, thanks for stopping by! My sister is a bit like you she has some sensory issues with certain things. Not me, I love all fruits and veggies, but I totally relate to the time issue and green drinks (smoothies) are an awesome way to get your day started with lots of yummy, healthy, veg! Anyway you look at it, green smoothies rock. Hope to see you on our playground again soon :)

The green drink recipe contains high oxalate veggies( spinach, celery, etc. more than 10 mg.) that started causing problems in my diet. Is there any low oxalate veggies I can substitute. Thanks

I am a diabetic, with kidney failure and have to watch my phofates and sodium. I have a real problem in having high numbers and tend to gain 10 pounts in between my one day on and one day off dialysis. Can you halp me in some recipies? Also I wonder if you juice one meal or two meal with one regular meal?? How does that work?

Hi Cindy, Im so sorry to hear about the health challenges youre having. Holy-tamolie, it sounds tough and admire you tremendously for trying to live a healthier lifestyle. In terms of your specific question, Im not familiar enough with the specifics of a diabetic diet and I truly know nothing of what someone with kidney failure needs to be doing so I would hesitate to offer anything specific. Do you focus on whole grains and fiber rich vegetables? So far as my juicing/smoothie regiment I generally have one green drink a day and sometimes Ill add a fruit smoothie when… Read more »

HELP I am in the process of making Dr Ozs green drink smoothie and I cant seem to puree the ingredients. I have half a blender full w/all the juices (lemon and lime) and it only purees the very bottom of it. Im going to try to process smaller amounts at a time, but I dont think there is enough liquid to process all the ingredients into 3-4 smoothies. Please e-mail me asap. I dont want to waste all the ingredients I just got for this drink. Thank you in advance for your quick response.

Well Ive been working on and off w/this and Im not even half way yet!!!! Ive cut the amount in the blender and have even added a little water. But the chunks keep flying off to the edeges during chop and puree. I have a Hamilton Beach blender w/about 10+ settings and I have to keep taking a break cuz Im afraid to over heat it. But it crushes and blends frozen drinks w/o any problem. HELP I really want to try this receipe due to my type 2 diabetes (on the insulin pump) and my fatty sirr. of the… Read more »

Hi Anne Marie, Im sorry I didnt see all your posts until today. Im glad you got it worked out. If youre going to be making green smoothies (or any kind of smoothies with whole fruits and veggies), I really recommend the VitaMix blender. I know it can be expensive, but its oh so worth it. Seriously, when I downsized my home and moved into a motorhome to become a fulltime RVer, I had to get rid of most all of my appliances, and being a girl who cooks and cares about health, I was rather attached to my appliances.… Read more »

I HAVE MADE THE GREEN DRINK AND I NEED TO KNOWN HOW MUCH DO I DRINK AT A TIME? I CANT DRINK THE WHOLE THING AT ONE SETTING. I WANT TO USE IT FOR COLON CLEANSING AND WEIGHT LOSS. DO I DRINK 8 0Z PER DAY? HOW LONG DO I DRINK IT. DO I EAT NORMAL MEALS? I MADE IT WITHOUT LIME BECAUSE THE RECEIPT I USED DID NOT CALL FOR IT. SHOULD I ADD IT NEXT TIME? THANK YOU JOLENE

Lesli
Guest
Lesli

Hi Jolene, Youll want to drink about 8 ounces at a time. The recipe makes 3 to 4 servings. Yes, I eat normal meals and consider the green drink a between meal refresher.

Id add the lime next time. Limes rescued British sailors from scurvy and they can rescue you from any vitamin C deficiency as well as acidosis (too much acid in the body). Limes are wonderful alkaline-forming fruits in the body because of their near zilch sugar content and ultra high mineral content, making them the ideal companion for a health-minded soul.

Lesli

Hi Ian, you would be better off to reduce the amount of veggies youre juicing to make just one serving because each hour that you save your juice, it loses some of its nutrients. Having said that, I know we all live busy lives and if time is the issue, youre better off to make the full batch of juice and save some for the next day. It wont have as many of the original nutrients (just like the juices you buy in the store dont have all their original nutrients), but its still a healthier alternative than skipping the… Read more »

I used a juicer to make Dr. Ozs Green Drink. I halved the recipe, with the exception of the lime, and lemon. It is tart, which I like (drinking it now for the first time). I find it quite palatable and refreshing. Id definitely give this juice an A+.

Hi Kristin, you can make it in bulk, but I wouldnt make more than you can drink in a day. The longer it sits, the more vitamins and nutrients it loses.

I am not a twin. I am the mom of three year old twins who have yet to show any type of tteepalhy. However I had a very inconclusive sonogram at only five weeks that was only showing that I had conceived twins. From that point on I strongly sensed that baby A was a boy. I felt it again a few weeks later watching a mother/son dance at a wedding. When I heard at 16 weeks that Baby A had the potential of being a boy and at 20 weeks that he was a boy it felt like they… Read more »

Regarding Dr. Ozs Green Drink. What about the whole issue of food combining? According to those who subscribe to this principle, you shouldnt eat fruit and vegetables together. The apparently require different digestive enzymes/juices to break down and can create a lot of gas and putrifaction when eaten together. Thanks in advance for your reply!

Kelly

Kelly

I dont want to start a huge argument, but food combining is nonsense. Fruit and veggies can be eaten together. After all they all end up in your stomach and it takes about 3-4 hours for food to digest. For thousands of years fruit and veggies have been combined in meals, combining them in a glass isnt going to harm you. That said, what may be happening is that different people react differently to any food change or addition. Ive been drinking green smoothies for almost a decade, both fruit and veggie greens, and have never had a single problem.… Read more »

Hi Fiona, Im still on the fence about that. I know of people who say its all rubbish and then there are those who swear by it. I think the only thing you can really do is see how YOUR body is affected by combining. These days Im leaning more towards the idea of combining but I still drink my smoothies with mixed fruits and veggies. Obviously, Dr. Oz doesnt pay any attention to food combining and he seems to lean very much toward naturopathic medicine, so I tend to trust him quite a bit.

Any ideas on what to replace the celery with? I hate celery

I make a fruit/veggie smoothie about 4 days a week (can also speak highly about Vitamix wonderful!) and just started putting chia seed gel in for my liquid instead of water or other juices. Any thoughts on that?

And thanks to Kelly commenting that you shouldnt eat spinach every day due to kidney stones. I currently do eat the stuff almost every day (in smoothies or just eat it whole because I love it) so Ill have to make some attempts to get out of my spinach rut.

Hi Stephanie, Great questions! Im not sure youll really taste the celery in the smoothie so if you havent tried it, you might give it a go. Having said that, I HATE, HATE, HATE horseradish and I CAN taste the smallest elements of it no matter how well other people think its well hidden, so maybe you will taste it, but I sure dont. I think its worth a go because celery is so amazingly healthy for us. So far as substitutes, I dont really know of anything specific. You might try google for an answer. If you find something,… Read more »

Read the problems..this poster forgot to mention dr oz uses water! Thats why it wont blend people.

Lesli

I think it might depend on your blender. I use a Vitamix and I blend it without any problem without added water. On Dr. Ozs website, I dont see the addition of water, but perhaps he used water on his show. If yours isnt blending properly, for sure add enough water to make it work.

Hello. Unfortunatly, I need to loose 5-10 pounds, though Im not willing to exercise for hours on end (nor am I physically able to-due to a disease that limits joint movement), go on a freakish berry diet, or take absurd diet pills. I was about to give up with loosing the pounds when I read about Dr.Ozs amazing Green Smoothie in a magazine. I tried out the smoothie and was surprised at the taste. Since then, Ive only had the smoothie 2-3 times. The reason why I havent had more is because of the taste. At first,I tried just gulping it… Read more »

Sasha, if youre only using the greens you are likely to get a smoothie that is very bitter. Many leafy greens are quite bitter especially raw. The fruit adds a rereshing tangy flavor and a bit of sweetness. There are many healthful combinations of fruits that taste great in smothies and are fairly low in calories. I find that a tart apple like a granny smith goes great with green smoothies, and is delicious combined with a bit of pineaple and some green grapes. A splash of lime juice is amazing as well. If youre concerned about calorie content, you… Read more »

I was wondering if I could make this smoothie and then put it in an ice cream maker to help reserve it for later use. Do you think this recipe would freeze better with yogurt? I was also wondering how well it would freeze because I want to give my kids a healthy frozen treat.

Hi Joy, I wish I could tell you Ive tried any of your suggestions, but I havent and unfortunately, Im no expert on what freezes well. Ive actually been thinking of doing more healthy popsicles myself. Let me know if you try it and how it worked out. An easy way to try it would be just to put about two tablespoons of your smoothie into one little ice cube tray and see how it works out. I may just do it myself :)

I am pretty used to the earthy taste of drinks like this by now, because about 4 years ago I changed my diet completely, and now my diet consists mainly of fruits and veggies. I used to hate the taste of veggies, but now, its the stuff I crave. Dr. Ozs green drink tastes GREAT, and Im not just saying that because its made of the stuff I crave. I think it would taste good for anyone, and I had to find the recipe!
