No-Poo is on your mind, Matthew? Come here, baby, let me show you how it’s done… (wink wink) LOL
OK, so that never actually happened — but a girl can dream, can’t she 😉
SO WHAT IN THE HECK IS NO-POO?
Quite simply the no-poo shampoo method — ‘no poo‘ for short — is a very natural way to wash your hair with All Natural Pure Baking Soda and water. It doesn’t get any simpler or purer than that for natural beauty, does it?
OK … sounds weird. You might be wondering why I was even open to trying such a weird thing as no-poo — just the name is enough to … well you get the idea 😉
IN THE BEGINNING … BEFORE I FELL IN LOVE WITH NO-POO
I was reading Jillian Michaels WONDERFUL book, Master Your Metabolism: The 3 Diet Secrets to Naturally Balancing Your Hormones for a Hot and Healthy Body! — I mean who doesn’t want a “hot and healthy body”, right? Well, I loved this book! I learned so much about metabolism (mine’s super slow), endocrine disruptors (my house was full of them) and obesogens (again, my house was rockin’ the obesogens) and it explained a large part about why I’ve always fought obesity. Great book if you haven’t read it. It’s not a shelf-sitter type of book — of which I have many. This one is definitely worth the $13 price tag! Not only is it a great read, but it’s a great reference tool too.
Once I started learning about the connection between the chemicals in our household and beauty products — and how they relate to obesity — the search was on for a natural, organic hair care program that wouldn’t break the bank. Have you ever noticed how expensive “natural” products are if you purchase them commercially.
That’s when I found the no-poo shampoo solution. Easy, inexpensive, DIY.
I LOVED THE IDEA OF NO-POO — I JUST WASN’T SURE IT WOULD WORK FOR ME!
First of all, my hair has always
leaned in towards been oily and I couldn’t imagine not washing it with a sweet smelling, high foaming, luxury shampoo!
But, I’m tired of being obese, so I decided to give it a try — and I fell in love — BIG TIME — with no-poo!
THANK YOU NO-POO!
MY HAIR HAS NEVER LOOKED BETTER … BEEN SOFTER … HAD MORE BODY … OR BEEN MORE MANAGEABLE! SERIOUSLY!
I didn’t win the “hair lottery” in my family. My dad, my brother and my sister all have wonderful, thick, curly, beautiful hair. I inherited my moms hair — so to speak.
Our hair is very, very — did I mention VERY fine! I have a lot of it, per my hair dresser, but it’s as fine as a babies and straight as a board. No Farrah Fawcett bangs for me — if you understand the reference, you’re one of my peeps 😉
So here’s what I experienced with the no-poo method…
- My oily scalp completely normalized itself. I can now go three days without washing my hair, if I so choose.
- My hair has more body than it’s ever had. That’s not to say it’s thick and luxurious, because it’s not, but for now, I’m just happy to have some body, baby!
- It gets squeaky clean. I know we’re not supposed to make the “squeak” when we wash our hair, but I grew up that way and have always considered it an indicator of clean. I was afraid no-poo would somehow leave it less than clean or even smelly. Nope! Not at all. It’s squeaky clean and doesn’t have any smell to it whatsoever.
- I save money — lots of money because — well it’s just All Natural Pure Baking Soda and water, after all!
A little side note here — my beautiful mama is 76 years
old young and her already super fine, “thin” hair had gotten to the point of being very “sparse” if you know what I mean. You know how it is with seniors a lot of times — their semi-bare little scalp shows through more than they wish it would? Well…
Drum roll, please … my beautiful mama’s hair is thicker and more beautiful than it’s been in over a decade!!! As a woman, that’s a hallelujah moment, don’t you agree? Yay no-poo! She asked me to share her experience with you because she’s so happy with it!
SO HOW DO YOU MAKE THIS AMAZING NO-POO SHAMPOO, LESLI?
I knew you were dying to know, so I asked the question for you 😉
I simply mix 1 tablespoon of the All Natural Pure Baking Soda with about 1 1/2 cups of warm water in a squeeze bottle. Shake it up a bit, so it dissolves and wah-lah! You’re done!
If you look around blogland, you’ll find lots of different proportions of baking soda to water. No worries, that’s simply because it sometimes takes a trial or two to find what works for your particular hair type. Don’t give up though. Try it out and before long you’ll be no-poo gorgeous!
You’ve probably also seen that several people use Bragg Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar as a conditioning wash. What that does is restore a proper PH to your hair. If you use it, you only want to apply it to the length of your hair and not your scalp. If you use it on your scalp, you’ll end up with very oily hair. Since my hair type is oily naturally, I found that using it on my hair length and avoiding my scalp is near impossible because my hair isn’t very long. Using the apple cider vinegar made my hair too oily and I was right back to washing it every day.
Having said that, if your hair is on the dry side (or maybe even medium), or if it’s particularly long, you’ll want to try the Bragg Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar as a conditioner. It will help you with tangles too. Just put some on your hair length (not your scalp) and rinse it out.
